LIFE SKILLS AND BEYOND

With LOGOS (Life Outlook Goals & Overcoming Strategies), young men have the opportunity to re-examine their lives and find true purpose and destiny. Whether it is completing high school, obtaining a GED, going to college, or receiving vocational training, our home is available to help each young man find positive outlets for growth.

Young men enrolled also learn the value of giving back to community. This is accomplished through numerous events and activities with other nonprofit organizations throughout Austin such as St. David’s Trinity Center. Daily work and chores provide discipline and help create strong work ethic. Residents learn gardening and natural farming through our neighbors Alexander Family Farm.

Each young man will have a binder as a record of activities and growth while at HFG HFYM (see LOGOS Course inset at right). Intense “coaching” will engage each resident and challenge them to establish positive goals and learn new skills.

COACHING FUTURE HUSBANDS, FATHERS, AND LEADERS TODAY

While most homes will label themselves as “residential centers”, “transitional homes” or “treatment programs”, we choose not to. We don’t even consider ourselves to be a “program”. Instead, we are an outreach to young men with need of redirection, providing them with the tools they need to excel in life. More than just resocialization, our philosophy is centered around coaching young men and helping them make wise decisions for themselves.

Studies have shown that when youth are encouraged through positive peers, they are less susceptible to negative behavioral situations and temptations(The Asset Approach, Search Institute, 2006, www.search-institute.org/communities). Mentoring is a strong focus in our home with many of the alumni staying as long as three years. They serve as interns, residential advisors, and volunteers. Encouraging the gifts and talents in youth is what helps them use those skills in positive leadership versus negative activity.

The Search Institute shares that positive peer mentoring is extremely beneficial. “As we work together on behalf of young people we ensure that they receive consistent messages and treatment,” they say. Such community nurturing is what LOGOS and our home is all about.
