Healing Hands Ranch
A deaf aftercare ministry of Deaf Prison Ministries Network.

History: Deaf Prison Ministries Network was born out of a burden for the lack of ministry to over 10,000 Deaf incarcerated in America. In 2000, during the D-E-A-F conference in Lisle, Illinois, a task force was formed to study the needs of a national deaf prison ministry. This task force met over a two year period to brainstorm, gather data, and develop this unique ministry.

As this vision took place the organization was named Deaf Prison Ministries Network. We sought advice from well known established prison ministries such as, Prison Fellowship, Champions for Life, First Contact, and Koinonia House. From this advice we were led to establish Deaf Prison Ministries Network for the purpose of developing and networking deaf prison ministries across America.

We recognized the great need to provide resources, training, and general information so that individuals and churches could effectively reach the Deaf whose lives have been impacted by crime. We were also encouraged to function as a non-denominational, evangelical, and independent ministry that would partner with the hundreds of hearing prison ministries that already exist. In this way we can maximize our resources, experience and knowledge.

Out of the several thousand churches currently ministering to the Deaf we estimate that less that one percent of the Deaf in prison are being ministered to. Those Deaf that we have identified have responded by saying, “Finally, someone has found us!” The isolation and frustration factor among prisoners is multiplied many times over with the Deaf.

Healing Hands Ranch: A God Given Opportunity!

Early on, the board of Deaf Prison Ministries Network saw the need of aftercare ministry for deaf ex-offenders. We confirmed the following facts:
  • A tremendous need for Deaf Prison Aftercare.
  • There are currently no aftercare ministries available specifically for deaf ex-offenders.
  • The recidivism rate among deaf inmates runs between 85-90%.
  • Many deaf inmates are denied early release on parole because there are no re-entry programs structured for the Deaf.
  • Deaf inmates are often denied inclusion in prison programs because of the lack of deaf services.
  • Job opportunities are extremely limited for deaf ex-offenders
  • The average deaf inmate reads at a second grade level or lower.

In February of 2006 Deaf Prison Ministries Network was given the opportunity to acquire a twenty-seven acre retreat center. This facility previously provided aftercare for hearing ex-offenders. It is located approximated fifty miles north of Houston, Texas near the beautiful Sam Houston National Forest and has been named Healing Hands Ranch.  This aftercare facility is also approximately thirty miles from where over one hundred deaf offenders are housed in Huntsville Texas. Our needs are tremendous but we are trusting God, and praying that all resources and programs will be in place by January 2007 so that we can begin accepting residence who are deaf ex-offenders.

Our Program at Healing Hands Ranch will consist of:

  • Spiritual growth and discipleship training.
  • Life skills training.
  • Education and GED completion.
  • Mentoring.
  • Addiction rehabilitation.
  • On-site job training opportunities

Please join us in this unique ministry to deaf ex-offenders.
