HISTORY / SUMMARY

Our mission is “Redirecting the lives of fatherless young men.” This mission is centered on mentoring young men and empowering them to be positive influences in our community. HFG Home for young Men (HFYM) seeks to equip and encourage young men (ages 14-25) to build strong marriages, increase their confidence, and take on more responsibility within their community.

HFG HFYM was started in the year 2000. Each year, 20-30 young men 7-8 at a time have passed through, and we have seen remarkable results in reentry into society. HFG HFYM is a private, faith-based nonprofit organization that provides residential care, education, and work experience training for troubled young men and families.

We provide a family-centered home environment for youth at HFG HFYM. Our program provides for physical needs such as food, shelter and clothing for each resident. Young men are taught independent living skills and provided with employment, social, spiritual, and recreational opportunities. We provide a safe and secure environment away from temptations and negative connections such as drugs or gang activity. For many, destructive habits such as chemical dependency and unhealthy/unsafe relationships have been conquered. HFG HFYM seeks to reinforce positive and productive behavior by providing independent living experiences for students preparing for young adulthood.

Our daily schedule includes nonprofit volunteerism, community networking and team building exercises. We engage our clients in Life Skills Training: budgeting, resume writing, character development, goal setting, family development, creative arts, volunteerism training. We understand that a young man’s capacity to grow academically depends on increasing their desire to learn. Teachers are skilled at developing and implementing individualized educational plans that work toward realistic goals. Individualized education helps struggling students achieve academic success.

We provide challenging work experience opportunities in evaluation, detail, grounds keeping/maintenance, food service, and office/clerical.  We engage our residents in horticulture activities working with our neighbors, the Alexander Family Farm, and on the HFG HFYM campus. These jobs build a work ethic and prepare young men for productive futures in their community. Students learn the value of hard work and find effective treatment for their behavior.

Services are offered to each individual for 1-3 years, depending on the case and circumstances of each young man:

  • For an emergency shelter situation, we offer services for one week and then the client and the staff will evaluate if further help is available.
  • For those wanting to see personal goals fulfilled and enter into more stability, we offer a one-year commitment to our program.
  • For those wanting to give back more to their community, we require a commitment of at least 3 years. Their graduation of our program will have included internships in our daily activities, mentoring other young men, and experience in working within a nonprofit organization. This allows them to give back to our program in a tangible way.

We strongly encourage family involvement to aid in the process of resocialization. This gives clients the validation needed to fulfill positive goals, such as completing their high school education and becoming productive and efficient employees in the workplace. We have worked closely with juveniles needing to fulfill probation requirements, collaborating with the Travis County Justice system, and every young man who desired to finish high school has graduated. As a result, we have developed key partnerships and collaborations with the Travis County/Williamson County legal system and Eagle Academy of Austin:

"They are the very best at being the best. We aim at reaching at-risk students that public schools are not able to reach. Eighty percent of our student population is at-risk youth who need an alternate learning style. All the kids [from Hungry For God] that have attended are exemplary students and really good kids. They are role models in our school. We appreciate what Pastor Larry does for kids, allowing us to enroll kids who might not have been able to have a chance."
