August 2009 Report

Introduction
God continues to show His favor upon us in many ways. Things seem to be moving on well and the children are growing and continue to be happy. Than you for supporting us despite the many financial hurdles that many of you are currently experiencing. Glory to God.

School

The Children had a holiday for at least a week and resumed school to catch up with the work that had been left pending due to interruption in the course of the term. However to make ideal for them, they do study up to lunch time and then participate in different home activities. The P6 class is scheduled to be opened in the month of September.

The school offices were shifted to the new class block and the school is now functioning as it ought to be. The water harvesting system has been installed on the new class block with a 10000 Liter water tank.

Fencing of the school has already been approved by the GICF Board and funds sent. We are currently working on the resources that are needed to accomplish this task. We look forward to a completely secure Primary School and a safer environment for our children. Thank you for the support towards this goal.

Health
We do thank God that we received a team of Medical people who were led by Dr. Lew Wilson, they made the eye examinations for both the children and staff. 27 Children were given glasses.  We used the same opportunity to dedicate the health unit and officially opened it for the children and staff.

We regret to inform you that Nana Dyana who had come to take charge of the medical needs of the children and staff at Lulwanda in March 2009, fell sick in August and had to return back in USA for specialized medical attention. We continue to pray for her and wish her a quick recovery.

However, we are working tirelessly to get a replacement nurse or doctor so that the medical needs of the home are catered for. If there is anybody out there who could be interested to volunteer, this is a great opportunity for you

Staff Training

Betty was part of the team of individuals who were taken for four days training in Computer support work in Soroti by the Technical person who was sent by the Midland Bible Church to operationalise the Internet Computer training facility they have built.

We also had a general staff training by the Technical Service Organization on the NOP and NSIPPI, which are official government policy documents that govern the operations related with orphaned and vulnerable children. This was a good foundation for all the staff to know the government requirement of them and how their individual role contributes towards the overall wellbeing of the OVC in the country.  The staff also had training from the NSSF.  This was the last month for the intern students and they presented on psychosocial support.

Farming
One of our heifer cows produced a calf, and its milk output is improving. We are optimistic that as we go a long, our cows shall be able to give us the necessary milk for the home consumption. Our Goats and pigs are also improving and in the near future we shall have a herd we are proud of.

The rains have been scanty although we have made the effort to open the land and plant more corn. Last season we were able to harvest about 200Kg of corn only. In the water logged places, we have planted upland rice to see how this could also help to optimize the utilization of this land for food production.

House keeping

During the holidays, children are encouraged to actively participate in all home activities and routines. The big girls and boys are now encouraged to do their laundry on Saturday, to help them appreciate what the ladies are doing for them. We also take them to the garden to do some planting and sometimes harvesting particularly of corn. I am glad to report that our children are eager and hard working and they all participate enthusiastically.

Discipline/Morals

We continue to emphasize good discipline amongst the children. It is our corporate responsibility at all levels of contact with the children. Apart from care and education, discipline is mandatory and it is through which that we can bring up responsible children that shall bring glory to Our God and King.

The biblically acceptable morals are taught and emphasized and we do thank God that many are taking on the right path. Those who may tend to divert are brought back to the fold through a multiple approach.

Meals

Our children continue to have the mandatory four meals a day with a variety of food stuff that greatly consider the appropriate dietary needs.

Thank you all for supporting us this far, even in such times of resource and food supply constraints, we have made the effort to continue normally. This is a great blessing that we are not taking for granted, given that many families have failed to get food and there is even evidence of some people who have died because of lack of food.

Kitchen supplies

We have made the effort to improve the kitchen utilities. We repaired our outer kitchen and even acquired a brand new Fridge with a freezer to further improve and increase storage space for some of the home fresh foods

Notable Visitors

The Political assistant to the Hon. Minister of State for Housing visited the home as a follow up of the Minister’s visit the month earlier.

Children Visited

Zurufa Nambuya was visited by her mother who came with her sister. They brought a turkey and bananas for the children.  Ivan Masifa and Flavia Wanyenze were also visited.

His grace and favor upon you all.
