February 2010 Report

School

The School is progressing on well and the children are enjoying the routine and all the school activities. From the community we have received about 30 children who commute daily. We are making effort to set a good standard and make our school competitive so that the world may come to realize the hidden potential of once forgotten children as they grow and excel academically to serve communities and nations.

Academics

The school has set a schedule for Primary seven and the home has adapted to the new changes and the school demands for this class. Our children go to school a little earlier than usual and leave late. The Target we set for ourselves is to complete the syllabus well in time and do much practice and preparing the class to answer the national examinations due some time in November 2010.

Regular weekly assessments have been approved for other classes and twice a week the children go home with some home work.

We got some new teachers Allen for English (P5-P7) and Phonics, Betty class teacher P5 and Dorcus P4.

UNEB sitting Centre

We are currently working on approving our school as a sitting centre for the national examinations and we have already submitted the paper work to this effect.

The School anticipates to participate in all the ministry organized events including; athletics, football and net ball competitions, Music dance and drama.

Health unit

We are working to renew our registration license, the delays have been with the Doctor on the record who has submitted his papers late.

Once this is done, it shall be easy for the unit to be integrated into the main stream district and hence national health System. This shall give us the impetus to access some of the community health services that we anticipate to give to the community through our health unit.

Work on the Home

We Praise the living God for his providence and we are encouraged by your support towards our wellbeing and the future of the home. Projects we are going to undertake shall greatly enhance the service provision to the children under our care and shall contribute towards the sustenance of the home.

The approved projects include; the solar panel installation, improving the bore hole and laying a new line for water supply to the home and its growing entities. Work on the farm has also been boosted as we intend to hire a tractor to do the digging of the land. We are grateful for all your support towards these projects.

Home activities

Children are busy at the school and therefore have minimal contribution to the home work.

However, they continue to participate in all the activities of their wellbeing as to when they are available.

Social welfare of the children

As children grow new challenges crop up, we have discovered some who are craving for much attention and we have also strengthened our counseling services.

We have received one Internee from Nsamizi Institute of Social Development and shall be at the home to have hands on experience.

The grown up children needs are also changing and we are making the effort to plan ahead so that we are not taken by surprise.

Farming

No sooner had we got the funds to start digging the land than the heavens opened,, almost half of the land is submerged in waters and we are praying that, it shall recede and then have the opportunity to work on the land.

On the sad note, the too much unexpected rains have caused a lot of flooding and land slides as you may have already have heard villages have been buried and a lot of people perished.

Our desire is to do a better job that should be beneficial to the children and the home. We are still exploring how best we can raise cows, goats, pigs and chicken to a level that could make the individual units contribute to the food needs of the home and at the same time be able to achieve self sufficiency.

Challenges

Given the abrupt change in the environment, many children and some staff members experienced some Malaria and fevers.

Water supply to the facility from the main National water grid is still a problem that we hope to solve since the funds for a new water line have been sent.

Visiting the home

God has been faithful over the years and some of you have made the effort to come and visit but still there those who have not yet made it to Uganda.

As always I am reminding you and inviting you to come and see for your selves what God is doing. Your coming is important and highly valued and it is important that you plan early to visit this summer. We welcome you all to Lulwanda Children’s Home and together God can do great work.
