July 2009 Report

Introduction

It has been a busy month with many activities going on. We have also had the opportunity to host a number of teams as they come for church planting and go. We are equally grateful for the many gifts that you continue to send to the children and the staff. Thank you.

Children

Our children are growing and increasingly becoming more active in all the areas. We also continue to offer the necessary counseling and group discussion to monitor their behavior, emphasize the teaching and sharing the word and caution those found to be going the wrong direction.

Education

We continue to make all the necessary effort to provide quality education to our children and we do thank God for the technical support that we have regularly received from the government department in charge of education and the Team of Mike and Mary Thrashers.

There is also increased improvement in the school infrastructure and we believe that by the end of the month of August 2009, a completed Primary school shall be fully functional with a Library equipped with much needed books.

Sports

The School continues to actively participate in different sports activities. Our children participated in Soccer and Net ball and Ivan Kuloba was recognized and even participated in the district team that came 4th at the National Junior Soccer competition held in the Western District of Kasese. He was accompanied by the Sports Teacher Nathan for a whole one week.

Music Dance and Drama

The school participated in the Sub County organized Music festivals and did very well. However, our position in relation to other schools who participated has not been communicated yet.

New Library

The school acquired a new library facility with over 4000 child centered books. We are grateful to Mike and Mary Thrashers and their team that worked tirelessly for the whole week to set it up and make it functional and useful to the children.

School offices

The school offices are almost done and we anticipate making them functional before the end of the month of August 2009. We have the head teacher and deputy’s offices with a reception and a storeroom for the school supplies.

Computers

We repaired seven out of the 10 computers, one needed to be reformatted and the other two have problems with their mother boards

Nursery school

We completed our nursery school and its currently one of the best building for the children. We made effort to paint some murals, letters and numbers making it appealing and children centered.

Farming

Effort continues to ensure that we optimally utilize our available land for the production of food to support and supplement what we do buy from the market. The global warming is here with us and the weather is every time becoming unpredictable, when we expect rain, it is dry and when we are giving up, it rains. This has put a lot of tension on the garden work and we just pray that the weather do indeed stabilize

Our maize, tomatoes and water melons have suffered the bad weather and we continue to pray for sufficient rains that could help us to have a harvest.

Animals

One of our heifer cows delivered just a few days prior to the full time span. Fortunately Maama Nusura and Geoffrey made all the effort to care for premature calf and as I write this, it has gained and even started walking around.

Kitchen

As earlier on requested, we do sincerely need a new deep freezer to further mitigate the need to store some of the home supplies. The current one is breaking into small pieces and they can not be replaced.

Medical care

Malaria, cough and dental issues have been the major issues for the month under review. In absence of Nana (Dyana Solheim), we had now and again to drive to town to seek medical help. However, we are grateful that Nana managed to come back home and immediately took on her responsibility.

Volunteers

Through Ms. Natalie Rolfe the home received six younger people as volunteers on a global journey for a week. They painted the nursery school and made it look presentable and attractive to children. The Team leader Sarah was here last year and also contributed some man hours towards the good of the children of the home.

Interns

The University Interns continue to carry out sensitization activities to the staff and continuous counseling to the children.

This month under review they have made presentations on;

-           Education assessment

-           Health assessment

-           Documentation and record keeping

-           Staff Development policy

In addition to participating in different activities at the home.  Early next month, they shall be making presentations on the National Orphans and other vulnerable children Policy (NOP), The National Strategic programme plan for intervention in Orphans and other vulnerable children (NSPPI), the National OVC standards among other tasks.

School block construction

We are in the final stages of the school block construction. We are even going to have some gutters and a 10,000 liter tank so that we can harvest the water for use at our pour flush pit latrine.

We are also making some lockers for each individual teacher and making the necessary shelves in the school supplies store.

From the bottom of our hearts we say thank you brethren for making Lulwanda Children’s Home Primary School what it is today. We believe this environment shall allow our children to even perform better at the national level examinations

Notable visitors

On 17th July, the Hon. Minister of State for Land, Housing and urban Development and Member of Parliament of the area where the home is, visited the home and highly commended the development that support the once orphaned children he saw. He was amazed by what has taken place since his last visit on 25th June 2005.

World Learning Inc. had training for a group of community based service organization from different parts of Uganda in Psychosocial support to Orphaned and Vulnerable Children in Mbale, they brought their trainees to the home for a field experience. All the organizations present commended the work so far done and made some observation for our improvement in some areas.  We hosted teams from Midland Bible Church and First Presbyterian Church Midland this month.

Finally we do thank you all for your continued support.
