March 2008 Report

Introduction

March is a transitional month from the extreme dry to a very wet weather. This drastic change in the weather brings with it a lot of cough and malaria among the children. However, the green is back and the home is greener than ever before. It has equally been a busy month and a lot of activities have been going on with the full participation of the children. It was also a month in which we had one of the longest holidays of the year, when we remembered the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Children

Health

Thank you all for your prayers, the chicken pox has disappeared. We ask you to continue to pray for us to overcome the incidences of coughing and malaria which we are now experiencing.

We took Esther and Jackline to hospital for some thorough medical check up after Esther complained of stomach pain and Jackline had bad scalp blisters after she was shaved. Esther was given some de wormers and Jackline put on 5 injections one daily, which she has been receiving. Those who are coughing, we bought cough medicine and we managed to secure some anti malaria drugs from one of the government health units of Bubutu which will last us some time.

Hospice medical Hospital did not come for the regular monthly medical checkups for all the children but we do expect them in the month of April 2008.

School

The school is running and within the next month of April they will close for the first term holiday. We are slowly integrating the school into the main district school system and our teachers are regularly invited to participate in the trainings organized at the district and the area’s Center coordinating tutors.

Meals

The children continue to receive the mandatory meals and in portions sufficient for their satisfaction. Great care is taken for those with low appetite or who are sick and the homely environments is recreated for the proper care of all the children and are given all the opportunities to fully participate.

Mothers

These play the pivotal role of care and they continue to do their best to meet the psychosocial needs of all the children. The search for the fourth mother is still on and we continue to pray and trust our God that He will give us someone with the heart and the zeal to serve in this position.

Other Staff Members

Because of growing confidence, this year we agreed that staff should take their annual leaves to see how we could cope without some of the people who have been with us since we started. The first to go on leave was the Gardener Mr. Julius Wamboga. The Cleaner Enoch Othieno followed suit and Florence Nekesa one of the cooks will also go in the month of April. Julius and Enoch are expected back in April. The remaining available staff members have bridged the gaps very well. All staff will have to take their annual leave this year, but not during the summer when all of us shall be around.

Capacity building

The last Friday of the month, we had a two-hour training session on the Basics of Communicating with Vulnerable Children. A Child Counselor from TASO gave all the staff the basic skills that we hope will continue to provide a basis for healthy relationships with the children as they grow up with all the staff at the home. The staff were also given some skills needed to relate better with the children, building the confidence and trust of the children to share their needs and grievances.

Gardening

The Sub County gave us some seed for onions and cabbages in preparation for the first farming season of the year. In addition we bought some maize and eggplants for the school farming lessons for the children. We hope that in the next three months if the rain continues, the home will have some food supplies from our garden for the children.

Repairs and Maintenance

Routine maintenance work continues to be done particularly on the electric and water systems. Replacement of worn out home supplies is also done to ensure that the home remains in most great shape and a source of comfort for all of us.

However, the road issues have not been resolved and during the wet season it really deteriorates making access to the home uncomfortable

Work on the pour/ flush toilets is almost done and we hope to start using this facility in the month of April 2008

Social Interaction

The Sunday school Children of Musese Presbyterian Church visited the home on Easter Monday and had a wonderful fellowship with the children. Apart from playing, praying and sharing a lunch meal together, they watched a movie on our newly donated projector.

The Good Neighbor Project

We did not have the good neighbor gathering with the community children because of the chicken pox and we had not communicated officially that the program resumes. We are optimistic that we are to resume in earnest at the end of the month of April 2008. We are even more excited about the news of the continued support to this program for the period of 2 years. Thank you brethren for your kind gesture and support of this magnitude. We always pray that He continues to bless you and protect you as He provides for all your needs that you continue to be such a great blessing to many families in Uganda.

The Management Committee work

The committee had its first management meeting of the year. They will be sitting again on 4th April to receive the audit report for 2006.

Notable Visitors

Some of the children’s former guardians came to visit and see how the children are doing in their new home. Many of the guardians with whom I have personally interacted, have been overwhelmed by the way the children have grown up in maturity and their size, thus giving thanks to God for what you are doing for us.

The home was also visited by Bishop Alfred N. Opiyo from Moshi Tanzania who came to visit Pastor Morris Ogenga.

Appeal for Coming over in summer

There are only 2 months until summer season. We continue to appeal to all our supporters to make an effort to come and witness what God is doing in Uganda. Your coming is vital and important to us and we always look forward to receiving many of you.

We pray that you will come and be blessed in every endeavor. Amen.

Children’s Study Tour - an Appeal

For the last three years we have been with some of these children, we had not got any opportunity to take them to the capital city of the country or to any of the big towns in the neighborhood. The school has proposed that we arrange to take some of the upper classes on a study tour to places like; Jinja, Kampala and Entebbe. The cost for taking about 60 children with their teacher for one day requires your support and we shall be grateful if   anyone out there could stand with us to achieve this before the end of May 2008.

We continue to pray for you all and thank our God for what you are doing for us. We only say thank you for standing with us. His rich blessings upon you all
