The Good Neighbor Program

The Good Neighbor Program

It has always been the desire of GICF to ensure that the children of Lulwanda Children’s Home have contact with children outside the Home, to stay in touch with the culture of Uganda. We also want to build on the existing goodwill we have in the community by allowing our children to share God’s love with those less fortunate. We have achieved these aims in part through "The Good Neighbor Program", which was kicked off in March 2007.

In this project, the children of Lulwanda reach out to their surrounding community by each being paired with a child from a neighboring family. The participating neighbor children receive a school uniform, a pair of shoes, school supplies and a hygiene kit, which will enable them to attend school in their own community. Even though primary education is free in Uganda, many families cannot afford the uniform and shoes to send their children to school, as together they may cost almost a month’s wages. Approximately monthly, the participating neighborhood children come to LCH to join their partners for a snack and playtime.

The neighbor family also receives a goat as a gift on behalf of the child at LCH. A goat provides a family with fresh milk, cheese and added income when they sell offspring and any extra dairy products at the market.
