Activities & Updates

Introduction
Towards the end the month we experienced a terrible hailstorm that devastated all the buildings in the neighborhood and destroyed our gardens. However, we do thank God that Lulwanda Children’s Home remained intact and none of our building structures were affected. Although the children got terrified, we managed to stand with them and after the down pour the older ones enjoyed collecting the snow stones.

Home environment
The home has take shape and all our children seem to be enjoying every activity. This is observed through the way they handle the different assignments assigned to them and the interrelationship that has developed and commitment to ensure that every thing runs in order and as scheduled.

Medical situation
The medical team from Hospice made the routine visit to home and examined all the children. A number of them have pulled out of the terrible medical problems they had come with and have even started to gain some weight.

Ritah’s ear problem re-emerged and she was taken to an ENT specialist. The Specialist made a preliminary surgery and she is expected to undergo another operation to solve her problem once and for all some time in December after the schools close for the long holiday.

The Pediatric surgeon who was supposed to work on Andrew Dezi was transferred and to date I am yet to get another Surgeon to help us handle Andrew’s case.

Meals
We continue to offer all the necessary meals to the children and struggle to ensure we are within our budget lines without compromising the quality although prices for all the basic food seems to be going up more so because of the demand that has arisen due to the floods in the east and north of the country.

Education
We are in the process of licensing the school with the district in preparation for next year. The Mbale District Inspector of the School visited the school and made recommendations for us to be licensed. He commended the school facilities and the teachers for the work being done and encouraged them to work towards ensuring that the school becomes a model for the district and the country.

We are in the last term of the school year and we expect our children to undergo assessment for promotion into other classes.

We are glad to receive Ms. Natalie Rolf from Midland Bible Church USA. She will be at the children’s home to support different departments. Welcome Natalie.

Farming
We have experienced some good rain for the period under review. We have also tried to use the rain optimally by working on our gardens. We have planted cabbages, greens and tomatoes and we hope they will do well.

Our trees are also growing in height, thus working as wind breakers. The fruit trees we had planted in the compound are all putting on fruits.

We also harvesting our last part of the peanuts we planted and we may expect to get about 100kg more for the home.

Child focus of the month: Joel Gwapa is a 4 year old, born in Kamonkoli, Budaka District. He is an Orphan who lost his father in 2005 and was abandoned by his mother in 2006 in the village since she could not afford to take care of him. The peasant maternal Grandmother could not be in position to provide him with the basic needs. There was no social support towards them and thus Joel was recommended to LCH for holistic care and support.

Staff focus of the month: Harriet Sanyu is the second kitchen staff in charge of assisting to prepare the evening meals for the children. In her own words: She is a widow for seven years now with six children to look after. She has experienced all the challenges of widowhood in an African setting, fighting for the survival of all her children single handedly but God has been faithful and provided hope where there has been despair. God has given me perfect health and my children, He has provided our daily bread and provided the security where there has been danger. Above all I thank God for the miraculous provision of a job at Lulwanda Children’s Home. This has greatly helped me and today I can afford to get all my basic domestic needs but above all I thank God for the miraculous provision of a job at Lulwanda Children’s Home. This has greatly helped me and today I can afford to get all my basic domestic needs but above all improved my self esteem. I continuously pray that God will shield me, my children together with the children He has entrusted to us at the children’s home, my fellow staff members and all the brethren who continue to support us in different ways. It is a great opportunity for us and I do thank God for it.

TGN
We continued to have the last Saturday of the month fellowship with all the children. However, we have also helped some of these children to access medical help who were in dire need for such help.

The first Saturday of December 2007 we shall commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the opening of the children’s home and it is then that we shall give out the health kit to all the TGN children.

Repairs and Maintenance work
Regular repairs and maintenance work has been carried out. The major challenge is regular lack of water due to very little water being pumped from the main supply system. The National Water technical team has advised us to lower our main tank tower if we are to get water or to have another lower tower constructed since according to the power and pumping pressure, water can not go into the existing main tank.

Staff Issues

House Mothers:
Christine was sick and then recovered, however, she lost her stepmother. Nussura has been having stomach pains for some time now, however, she got some drugs from a Gynecologist from the main Referral Hospital in Mbale and they seem to have brought some relief. Ritah, the mother seems to have integrated very well in the team.

Teachers:
Rebecca as the head of the school has been making all the necessary effort to make the school run and she continues to ensure that they follow all the syllabus and the curriculum as per the requirement of the Ministry of Education and sports. Scheming and lesson planning are mandatory and are being and followed to the letter.

General staff:
Ms. Betty Mutuwa lost her Elder Sister (died due to cancer) and was buried at their ancestral home in the course of the month. LCH was represented by the LC3 chairperson, Pastor David Muwoya, the staff and a selection of children at the burial. Florence lost her sister also and was buried far off, we could not attend the burial.

Emerging issues:
We need more school furniture to cater for all the children appropriately.

The issue of establishing another water tank at a lower level than the existing one has come in, but we have been having a problem of water at the site since the power and the pressure became low.  Most times we don’t have running water as the tank can not get filled with water to supply the home. This is an urgent issue that if handled will help us a lot.

During the hail storm, two poles on our power supply line fell and almost for a week we have had no power at the home. Without power, the rate of use of gas increases which is also costly. The issue of a small generator and a special wiring for only those critical units becomes very critical for the home and it is something we need to consider for the good of the home.

As we clock three years, it has increasingly becoming important to find local means through which we can generate some funds that can be reserved in case of a rainy day.

Today I am glad we have a musical system (keyboard and speakers) for the home, thanks to the donor in Grace Community Bible Church and to the Tomball church members who hand carried it over last August. My appeal is to have a pianist who can volunteer to train some of our children and interested staff members so that we can ably and professionally exploit this machine to the Glory of God.

Volunteer Ms. Natalie Rolfe
She arrived on Sunday 21st October and reported for work on 23rd October 2007. We expect to have her with us for more than a year serving in different areas at the home.

End note
It is a great blessing that you all have accorded us to serve the little and growing children of Uganda. We continue to pray for you all that God may continue to use you for the benefit of many children in Uganda. Thank you Brethrens for your commitment and love.
