May 2010 Report

Introduction

God has been gracious and things seem to be going on well. The children had their busy holiday and have grown and fully participate in all the different activities of the home. We do thank you all for your continued prayer and financial support in such difficult global financial hardships.

Children

They have been active through out the month with a number of activities going on at the home. They participated in virtually all the activities; cooking, washing and supporting the younger ones or those who are sick.

Health

The health of our children has been handled very well. our clinic staff continue to do a commendable job in diagnosing and prescribing the right medication for the children. Despite the heave rains we have experienced this season, the malaria incidences have tremendously reduced unlike in previous periods of the same seasons.

School Activities

The School reopened for second term on Monday 24th May 2010.

Candidate Registration

We are in the process of registering the student candidates who shall be sitting the Primary 7 national Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) some time in November 2010. Effort has also been made to teach them thoroughly so that they can be in position to complete the mandatory syllabus in time and be prepared in the different approaches to answering examination questions.

These examinations are very important for both the students and the school because they determine which secondary school they could go to and whether our school is competitive to attract more students who in turn shall be able to pay.

School supply container

We made the effort to submit all the necessary paper work and after 21 days, those tax invoices expired, they called us and made the effort to renew them. We are currently waiting to hear from them. We are hopeful that before the end of June we may be able to get the tax exemption through. Please continue to pray for this to succeed.

Community Children at the school

Although there has been some movement of community children the number has remained at 30 pupils.

School Staff

The school staff seems to be doing well and we are preparing for performance assessments to ensure that they are delivering what they are mandated to do for the benefit of the children under our care.

We are also optimistic that in the coming month we shall be in position to get the Phonics teacher to assist in further rolling out this program across all the school children.

School Library

The library played a central role this holiday. Our children spent much of their holiday time in the library since the government has banned holiday teaching for school throughout the country.

Health Unit

The Health unit handled most of the illness that we had in the course of the month. Clinical officer Pamela and Nurse Getu have continued to serve to their best of ability.

Betty Namutosi

Our daughter who is lame was taken across to Kenya in Busia District Hospital Physiotherapy unit to review her situation. After an examination, they have decided to make a foot extension for the left leg for use during the day and a strainer for the right leg to use at night. They have also given her a support walking crutch.

They have also discovered that her right heel tendon is stiff and they shall do a minor surgery on it to improve on its flexibility. This is scheduled for 6th August 2010 in at Nyadong Hospital Kenya.

Maliza and Doreen

These had their eyes tested and they were given glasses for use. Sylvia and Ritah’s eye sight had greatly improved.

Farming

Due to heavy and regular rains farming at the farm has become a nightmare, we had just managed to cultivate about 3 acres but the tractor got stuck in the mud for two whole days. We had anticipated to re-dig the land we had first dug but to date, the rains have played havoc. We are still waiting for it to subdue to resume the serious work we had begun with. Other things like the cows, pigs goats and chicken are all doing well and contribute to the home food needs regularly.

Internship

Two internees from Nsamizi Training centre completed their assignments and went back to study. They fully participated in the home activities and supported us in our in different areas. Currently we have one student from Christian University Mukono for internship till August 2010.

Local Management Committee

In May we had a series of management committee meetings to handle some of the pertinent and critical issues affecting the home. In addition the committee also met the staff and addressed them on a number of issues. That interaction helped to encourage, admonish and focus the staff to the purpose for which the Children’s home was founded. We are also working towards recruiting a Phonics teacher and an Assistant Administrator.

Staff issues

Mother Christine has been sick but as I write this she has improved and going around her duties well. Mother Sylvia shall be going for her annual leave in June 2010. Sanyu the kitchen staff and Margret the Tailor went for their annual leave and have all reported back.

Teams visiting

We had a team from Monument Bible Church Colorado visiting the home on one weekend and sharing a meal with the children. We look forward to more teams coming this season.

May God bless each of you for supporting Uganda’s orphaned children.
